SOD would like to cordially welcome you to the second installment of BOM.

We define a BITCH OF THE MONTH as anyone irritating enough to warrant a rant of Homeric proportions; male, female, or whatever.

The decision to award this honor to the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr. certainly required little deliberation. You might recognize him as the preacher who pickets the funerals of individuals who are recognized, or simply affiliated, with homosexuality. We recognize Freddy-boy as a boorish imbecile who has taken it upon himself to rekindle fascist ideologies of a bygone era through his hate propaganda and protests at ANY funerals that will get media attention.

But who really is Rev. Phelps? What is it that defines him as the man he is today? Well, gentle readers, from all reports Freddy-boy appears to be an embittered, disbarred lawyer turned preacher who resides in what he describes as a literal Hell on Earth…Yes, that's right…TOPEKA, KANSAS. He especially ascribes his hometown as virtually a Hell on Earth due to its "Mark of the Beast" Zip Code (66604). Now, SOD has never been to Topeka, but we can assure you that it is no worse than waiting in line at a concert to get into the women's loo.

Freddy-boy's church is purportedly made up entirely of his family and he allegedly has several lawsuits filed and pending against his "church members," if you can call a family gathering that, for acts of inappropriate behavior against those who dared to challenge his disturbed concept of hypocritical righteousness. He claims to be a wholesome, old school Baptist, who in his spare time apparently likes to vomit out obscene and slanderous flyers and to promote hate and intolerance. But, hey, the man can't be all that bad, can he? After all, how many grandparents do you know would allow one of their grandchildren to petition to have their "picketing" of funerals counted for as an extra-curricular activity?

Most recently, Phelps and followers protested at the candlelight service held to commemorate the victims of the Columbine H.S. massacre. Why, you may ask? Because he apparently believes that preaching hate will remedy what he perceives as the "evils" of our society. But if violence and insipid intolerance is the Rev's version of fixing our society, then SOD would certainly rather stay broken.

So Ladies and Gentlemen, please join us in a collective moan of disgust and a "bird" salute to SOD's second BOM: Rev. Fred Phelps Sr.
